For Prospective Students

Mentoring and collaborating with students is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. If you are interested in joining my research group, please take a moment to read the following note.

For Ph.D. Applicants

I am always looking for talented students. If you're interested in applying for a Ph.D. position, please submit your application through different PhD programs in the School of Computer Science (SCS) at CMU. In the past, I have taken Ph.D. students from the following Ph.D. programs in the SCS:
  • Societal Computing (S3D)
  • Machine Learning Department
  • Computer Science Department
  • Robotics Institute
  • Human-Computer Interaction Institute
  • You are encouraged to apply to more than one program. If you apply to any of these programs and would like to work with me, please feel free to mention my name in your personal statement.

    For Students at CMU

    If you are
  • an admitted Ph.D. student looking for an advisor, or
  • an undergraduate or master's student looking for research projects,
  • Feel free to email me with your CV and a brief description of your research interests.

    For Visiting Opportunities

My group frequently hosts visiting students. (See the list of past visiting students.) Due to the high volume of inquiries, I can only accommodate a limited number each year.

If you are interested in visiting my group, please email me your CV and a brief overview of your research interests. You are also encouraged to include a paper you have worked on or a 3-slide presentation (PPT) highlighting your previous research experience.

If you are a rising senior in the Turing Class of Peking University or the Yao Class of Tsinghua University, you should consider applying to the PKU-Tsinghua CMU summer research internship program.
